Storage & Maintenance of Transmission Belts

Proper storage and maintenance are essential to preserve the performance and lifespan of transmission belts. Even before installation, incorrect storage can lead to premature wear, deformation, or material degradation. The following guidelines ensure belts remain in optimal condition.

  1. General Storage Guidelines
  • Avoid Sunlight and Heat:

Store belts away from direct sunlight, heaters, or other heat sources.

UV radiation and high temperatures can weaken belt materials and reduce elasticity.

  • Keep Dry:

Belts should be kept away from water, rain, or high moisture areas.

Ideal relative humidity is 50%–80%. Excessive moisture can cause swelling or mold growth.

  • Prevent Chemical Contact:

Avoid exposure to acids, alkalis, oils, organic solvents, or other reactive substances.

Contact with these materials can degrade rubber or polymer components.

  • Avoid Mechanical Damage:

Do not bend, fold, or twist belts.

Avoid stacking belts under heavy objects.

Keep belts at least 1 meter away from sharp edges or machinery.

  • Temperature and Humidity Control:

Ideal storage temperature: 15°C–40°C.

Room temperature changes in the finished product warehouse do not need strict control, but avoid direct heat or extreme cold.

  • Maximum Storage Time:

Under proper conditions, belts can be stored for up to 5 years.

Regularly inspect belts for signs of aging, cracks, or deformation.

  1. Recommended Storage Methods
  • Hanging:

Ideal for V-belts and flat belts.

Use belt racks or hooks to prevent bending and maintain shape.

  • Box or Shelf Storage:

Suitable for timing belts or small belts.

Store belts flat, avoiding folding or stacking.

  • Away from Heat Sources:

Maintain a safe distance from radiators, lamps, or other devices that emit heat.

  • Avoid Excessive Weight:

Do not place heavy objects on belts; deformation may occur under prolonged pressure.

  1. Pre-Use Inspection

Before installing a stored belt:

  • Inspect for cracks, fraying, or any visible deformation.
  • Check that the belt retains flexibility and elasticity.
  • Ensure pulleys and mating components are clean and free from wear.
  • Verify that belt dimensions have not changed during storage.
  1. Key Maintenance Tips
  • Store belts in a clean, dry, and temperature-controlled environment.
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals, moisture, and sunlight.
  • Do not bend, fold, or stack belts.
  • Inspect regularly to ensure the belt remains suitable for installation.

Following these guidelines ensures belts maintain their integrity, provide reliable operation, and achieve their maximum service life, even after long-term storage.
